Saving Wetlands from Exploitation—Both Legal and Illegal

Pantau Gambut's latest analysis reveals a drastic surge in hotspots across the Peatland Hydrological Unit throughout August 2026. From 15,067 hotspots in July, the number jumped to 166,728 hotspots, accounting for 79% of total hotspots from January to August 2026.
This surge is concentrated in a number of provinces and was even found within licensed concession areas as well as national strategic project zones. Below are some key findings from this report.
Key Points:
- Central Kalimantan rose 2,494%, from 2,821 to 73,183 hotspots
- HGU (Cultivation Rights) areas accounted for 41,807 hotspots, up 1,355% from July
- PBPH (Forest Utilization Permit) areas rose 962%, to 7,192 hotspots
- PT Mayawana Persada (PBPH) and PT Mekar Karya Kahuripan (HGU) recorded the highest number of hotspots among corporations
- The Central Kalimantan Food Estate recorded 24,916 hotspots
- Papua Selatan's food, energy, and water self-sufficiency zone recorded 9,536 hotspots
